Help me fully understand SR2010, because I am confused!

Post by gfanikf »

I really enjoy playing SR2010. The only problem is everytime I start playing I just feel so vastly confused. I've tried the manual and tutorials, yet I still feel overwhelmed. I want to do more than just try and conquer terroirty with the units I start out with. Part of the problem is that I am not used to unit production taking as long as it does compared to other games. Has anyone written an FAQ or strat guide that can help explain the core concepts of the games as I really appreciate the depth of the game, but at the moment cannot fully grasp it. I have checked out the wiki but there are certain areas that are quite slim. Has anyone developed scenarios where you can test out the basic areas of the game ie running trade, planning an attack, etc? I really can't wait to go home and play the game after work today, but I hope I will find some advice to truly enjoy and understand it.

Thanks

hmmmm... quite an open ended request.

The build times aren't so bad once you get used to them. Actually they play a key role in the attack planning you showed interest in. You simply have to move your horizons forward more. Sometimes the waiting period will give you time to notice something important to your plan you would not have if you had attacked right away with available units.

The best advice I can give you is to pick a smaller area, with a region you have interest and/or familiarity with to play. A region with natural resources to trade and exploit is a bonus. Then play that region a few times, as many as necessary. Each time you play, concentrate on a new part of the game. If your neighbors keep attacking you too early for your liking, then work on learning the diplomatic end of things to calm them down. If your economy won't support you plans, then work on that. Each time you play, you will add another layer of knowledge to your repertoire and another aspect to your plans, keeping what works and changing what doesn't. The concept of playing the same region repeatedly is to remove the effort of learning the quirks of a new region while you figure out the nuts and bolts of the game.

I hope I helped in some small way, feel free to ask more questions as they arise. :)

Thanks

Actually, that is very helpful as I tried playing the PA map today as I'm originally from Philadelphia and found myself surprised when I actually won it. They only thing was it was just using the units given to me. I think what you suggested is a great way for me to learn how the various functions work. I guess my next question is excluding the manual and wiki are the any good beginner guides on the various functions of the game (state, econ, production) that I can read so I can try the various functions out in more detail.

The forums here are your best source of opionated insight and experience. It can be a bit overwhelming as it is large. To keep it simple, avoid reading 'old news,' unless it is referenced in current news. By this I mean let anything older than about 9 months be left alone. A lot of good advice just gets recapped anyway as successive generations go by.

Patience is a virtue with this game, although if you got a win with what you had I'd say that's a good thing. In the larger scenarios [where there are more and larger threat axes] you will find that nobody is in too much of a hurry to start anything. It helps to learn how to throttle up and down the hostility levels, and this is largely a matter of personal experience.

Reading the signs from your allies and opponents is not an easy thing, but you'll get there. At some point you will realize that you are in a position to impose your style of play on the game - which is at least one kind of sr2010 victory.

Try picking a map and playing at least half of the regions on it - this will give you a good sense of what your opponents sense about you and how little you know about them.

p.s. As you read the forums you will discover that there are aspects of the game that even the developers either forgot about or never considered one way or another. I think there may be one or two peple who could be said to fully understand this game - but I don't know who they are.

Don't worry - be happy.
Colorless green ideas sleep furiously [but otherwise, they do not worry and are happy].

Try the "concepts tutorial". That may help a bit.

I'd suggest...

http://www.supremewiki.com/index.php/Upgrademod
Balthagor's Upgrade mod makes unimportant things much smaller and makes the roads and railroads much easier to see.

I've been trying felinis' mod package. Quite nice. :)

And the most essential mods from DeanCo
http://www.supremewiki.com/index.php/EZ ... ocator_Mod

and his High Vis mod which is included in the most recent update:
In the registry directory in the supreme ruler 2010 directory run GUI-highcontrast.reg and it should be installed. [/list]
