What is the best way to mass troops at the border?

Post by gfanikf »

I mean effective deployments and ensuring that the other country cannot just come in and take land.

Say for example USA deploying to the Canadian border in WWIII.

It depends somewhat on how many units you have free for the purpose. (you did mean purely defensively, correct?) There are two basic deployment tactics. If you have a bunch of units available for the purpose, then form a loose line of stacks. Leave 1-2 hexes between stacks. 2-3 leg infantry, and 2-3 towed arty per stack will work fine. If you are short of units, then try and set up defensive stacks on all supply sources. The Evil Canucks might drive in between your defenses, but they will run out of gas soon enough and you can slaughter them at will.

Let me know if you want further detailed tactics. Welcome back btw. :D

Space your troops out so they have overlapping fields of fire when possible. So putting stacks in every other is a good way to go if short on units.

Place units on the terrian they fight best in.Infrantry in close combat hexes, tanks in open hexes,etc...

Dont let the enemy units retreat safely.Keep a fast reaction force that can safely chase down those maimed enemy units and kill them before they can get away.

If you cant dominate them with offense, arrange so you will bleed them thru defense.

And as always, pay attention to what your enemy does. The AI in this game (like most) is VERY predictable.Even down to being able to identify exactly what route they will advance by.

Thank you guys very much!

It is nice to be back. :) Right now for some reason Canada kicks the crap out of me even when I bitchslap them with the SIOP beforehand. Odd I just finally put a bomber group together so I figure I need to do that with troops too. I think it's me getting used to a more slower pass of gameplay (in a sense).

Also three quick questions

Is there an effective way to use a dozen or so nukes (strategic or otherwise) for a first strike attack, so your troops with will only have to mop up the rest of Canada?

What are the effectives of Bio-weapons? It doesn't seem that the research leads to any units.

How does one effectively destroy another nation? I've had a lot of fun in the NY and PA map. The only question is I've captured the capital in the PA one and its doesn't end it, but if I capture one in the NY one all there land I hold becomes mine and the uncaptured ones goes to the nearest rival. I just want to know what the rule is as I'll make sure to capture all the land first.

No, nuke use carries a very severe penalty.Their use will do more harm to your troops by way of morale penalty than the enemy ones you nuke.
Its a highly debated topic between the players and devs, but we havent changed the devs minds on it much. Yet :P

They where decided against. The techs in the game mostly just carry negative reactions politically to their research of.Think Iran and its nuke research

A region can fall due to a single capture of thier capital.OR it can take many captures, depending on other conditions of the region.

A region can fall even without its capital having been taken even once.Again those other factors ,like DAR and MAR, decide this possibility.

AND the status of a regions DAR and MAR depends on a lot of other factors like economic conditions, military loses,etc...

The worse condition a region is in, the greater the chance it will fall when something else bad happens (like loss of a capital).

Now an odd thing to the system is,sometimes taking an enemy city, even a capital makes said enemy region stronger.
An example of this would be a region that was severely short on needed resources and or cash.A city lost by them may well reduce their need for certain resources, thereby improving that regions overall status.
OR
Perhaps that airbase you just captured , was killing the enemy regions economy due to its upkeep ,staffing costs,etc.. .
BUT now that you own it, its one less major bill that region has to pay and so it might be able to put more money into its military and social spending.Again this could result in the region actually becoming stronger due to the loss.

The only sure way to guarantee this is to actually do it, take all the land first. You don't have to actually clean out every hex. Personally I try and occupy the facility hexes I want beforehand, and Tkobo has described conquering entire border lines (between your target and any other neighbor) before taking the capitol.
