Why ask for cd-key after re-installing Windows?

Post by madjack »

I recently re-installed Windows XP, and SR2010 asked my cd-key.
Ok, I entered it.. But it asks again, and I can't start the game. Why?
And is there any way to fix this problem without re-installing SR2010?
My version is 4.6... and my copy is original.

To answer your question ...

Quite often when you reinstall windows you will have to reinstall other programs. To use an analogy, it's like replacing all of your upper and middle management in a company you run... Some your staff will take to the change well and some won't. The ones that won't will have to be reinstalled - "you're fired". And then someone new will be "hired".

We ask you again for your CD key because CD Keys are installed and stored into the registry and the game needs to check for the key when it runs. When windows is reinstalled you get a new registry, so all keys and program settings are lost for all games and all programs. This goes beyond CD Keys - to registry keys such as player names. We do keep some settings in the program directory in an .INI file.

In some cases you could just enter the data again as you have tried to do but other times you'll have to do another reinstall of the game. If it helps hearing, our game has a very clean and simple install.

Got the e-mail, I'll read through it when I get to work (about to go eat breakfast).

Loyal developers answer like that :D

That's what I love about small budget games. You pay and you even get help from the devs. Good luck with all the work.
