European Landscape - Ardennes' Forests

Post by Jan »

living in the Ardennes (Marche-en-Famenne, military base in some scenario), i was a bit suprised to see that the area is classified as a light forest in game.

is it any reason to not have it as "Dens FOrest/Hill"?

PS: if you need more sources or even pctures, feel free to ask ;)

PSbis: if there's a reason, is it the same for Finland and Sweden?

cheers,

Probably not a specific reason, we try and follow terrain of an area according to the real world but our rule is that we put terrain that matches what the satellite imagery looks like.

It should probably still be light forest, I don't think there are many "undeveloped" areas in Europe any more, I would expect that there are some roads already cut through the forest and that it is possible to move through it. Dense forest is more like what you would find in Northen Canada or some areas of Russia.

i can tell you that no highway have been built trough teh Ardennes and since it was an (undefended) obstacle for Rommel's division 60 years ago, i don't think that it shouldn't be not a problem for a whole batalion.

As being familiar with the area from a military pont of view (six years in the "Chasseurs Ardennais"), i can tell you that the whole area is very favorable to ambush because of narrow road and close range.

PS: what is the thinking that lead to put Alps as hills in game? WHat is the height required to be qualified as a mountain?

cheers,

As mentioned, our rule is follow what the imagery looks like. Feel free to change it in your version if you prefer. Not sure what terrain is being used in SR2020

There is was no specific height standard set for high/not high or mountian vs. hills, but this is all very small detail stuff. I'm afraid we don't have time to debate the terrain used for individual hexes in individual areas. As mentioned, if you disagree with our settings, you can always change it.

it doesn't mean that the work done is not good, given the herculean work that it is, having only local irregularities is a good result.

i don't want the annoy you, i only wanted to report you details that you may not had the time to research when you did the work.

cheers,

no problem, no offence taken. When we get around to the beta I'm sure some terrain will be changed for play balance as much as anything else. That will probably be the best time to consider such things.
