Let's hear about relationships - 1936/1940/1941 maps
Here is an area that the community could be of some help to us pre-release. Obviously the world remains a big place and everyone has different opinions of everyone else. What would be helpful is if people could share their comments here on who should think what of whom. Obviously we already the key ones such as German opinion of the Soviets but what was the relationship between Germany and Mongolia? Or Brazil and Mongolia?
*Specific Requests for Posts in this Thread*
- Start your post with the country you are talking about
- You can talk about the big regions if you like
- If you want to talk about another country, start another post please. This will keep the thread easy to review.
- Opinions listed here will be considered, but we may make design decisions separate from the feedback given here.
Relations are, as of this writing, done along the same lines as previous Supreme Ruler titles in terms of a Civilian opinion and a Diplomatic opinion with a Causus Belli rating. This may change and what impacts these values and in what way most certainly will change but we are looking for the snap shot of Spring 1936 at this time and can adjust things as the system evolves. This is an effort by us to front load some of the feedback we anticipate at release. There are always some comments of region A should like region B more/less than it does. These are often based on various opinions as this is an abstraction of history and cannot be perfect.

Nepal
Nepal even though it was under British rule had extremely good relations with Nazi Germany, as the Germans had sent many diplomatic and scientific expeditions there. Tehre were even talks about Nepal joining the axis if the Germans ever came relatively close...

Yugoslavia
Yugoslavia had granted Fascist Italy Rijeka and other concessions in the hope it would raise their Diplomatic relations. Whether it did or not is a question I can't really answer. I suppose it did though as they has started trade agreements and later the Italians did not object to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia joining the axis. They wouldn't have invaded had the regime not been changed. So I guess at the start of the game they should have relatively high relations though the opinion of the people of Yugoslavia would be very low indeed of Italy.

Persia(Iran)
Persia's government, and im going to assume citizens, where historically friendly towards Germany, mostly because of anti-imperialist sentiments. Persia monarch during WW2 was also close to the Nazi government and because of this Perisa was invaded by the UK and Soviet forces in 41 in order to install a puppet government in Persia and to aid in allied supplies to the Soviet Union.

Iraq
Iraq historically resented British rule and because of this there was popular support in Iraq for the Germans, even with Iraq's prime minister being Pro-Axis. During 41 the prime minister even ordered the withdraw of British troops from Iraq, leading to an armed conflict between the Iraqi ( with the help of the Luftwaffe) and the British and the fleeing of the Iraqi government and imposing of British rule.

French protectorate of Syria and Lebanon
The government of this territory also aided with the Iraqi rebellion in that they allowed the refueling of Luftwaffe aircraft. The British had thought that the protectorate was pro-German and having confirmed this, invaded the territory leading to a surrender of the government of Syria and Lebanon a month later.

Re: Let's hear about relationships
Yes, i would believe so seeing as the German government had been providing Persia with economic aid sense the early 30's, if not earlier. Even when the Nazi's where elected into power, Germany still maintained economic agreements with Persia.Balthagor wrote:Do you believe this to have been the case as early as '36?Nic5071 wrote:Persia(Iran)

Re: Let's hear about relationships
US/Latin America
-key event was FDR's "Good Neighbor" policy that led to the Rio Pact as well as better economic relations between the USA and Latin America
Mexico
--expansion of oil drilling led to more money and stablity for the government
Central America
--Heavy role of USA business in region, especially in agriculture (that is where we get the phrase "Banana Republic" from)
Panama
--still very pro-USA at the time, but beginning to change dramatically into the early 1950s
Cuba
--Pro-USA but with some major economic issues, mostly due to heavy USA agriculutral business influence (sugar market)

Re: Let's hear about relationships
Switzerland
Terrible relations with the Soviets(They never recognized the Communist government). Slight edge in relations with the Allies over the Axis, it was quite clear to them who the real threat to their sovereignty was.
Liechtenstein really should be part of Switzerland instead of Austria, they have maintained a customs and monetary union with the Swiss since the fall of Austria-Hungary.
For more info on Switzerland during WW2, you could read Stephen P. Halbrook's book: The Swiss and the *****.

Nationalist China(Republic of China(ROC)), now Taiwan.
..Had exellent relation with the 3rd Reich before the sino-japenese war. Germany insisted for peace between the 2 countries and kept good relation with ROC even in the middle of the invasion of China. The Japaneses didn't treated German investment in China better than other foreign investment. It's subject of debate, but I think Germany had better relation with nationalist China than Japan. They favored Japan only because it was a stronger ally.

Re: Let's hear about relationships
In Vargas Era, Brazil was an anti-communist dictatorship. They maintained neutrality until Brazil got closer to the Allies due to receiving loans and trade from them. Brazil severed diplomatic relations with Germany in 1942 and granted United States to use bases in northern Brazil. Hitler did not like this and several Brazilian ships were sunk by German and Italian submarines (with the approval of BDU, Mussolini and Hitler) in 1942 which led Brazil to declare war to Germany in 1942. However the first combat between Brazilian army and Wehrmacht was as late as latter half of 1944 in Italy.
Argentina had generally positive view of Germany, which maintained great influence in Argentina due to many German immigrants. Argentina long resisted Allied pressure and only as late as month before end of war in Europe, did they declare war on Germany. Even if Argentina was at war with Germany, many ***** fled and found safe haven in Argentina. Some scource says many elderly Argentinian men claimed that during the last days of war in Europe, they saw several German uboats within eyesight from the coast of Argentina (they were probably participating in "ratline" smuggling of Nazi war criminals). If Argentina was really an enemy, uboat captains would probably not have dared to go too close to their shore except to surrender...and surrender of uboats happened only after they had received the radio message from BDU that war was over. Argentina declared war on Germany but clearly, was not practicing what it preached, thus belonging to Allies only on paper. You could put Argentina and Germany in very warm relations with each other even if they were at war.

Re: Let's hear about relationships
Hi everyone.
I'm working on relationships right now. So if you have some more specifics please let me know.
I will start with starting relations in March of 1936 ... and I'll continue to work with specific events that will change relationships particular ways as the game is played.
For example, when Poland is attacked by Germany in Sept. 1939 - which countries have a problem with this? How will their relationships change? If you know, let us know.
We can and will research things but we value input into this. We hope that resulting actions and relation changes will occur and players won't think the AI is under or overreacting too much or too often.
As mentioned, keep ideas separated so we can go through them.
As an added method to communicate to us - these are how values are set in the game.
Civilian Relations: -1.0 >>> +1.0 (negative 1 or -1.0 is extreme hate, while positive 1 or +1.0 is extreme love)
Diplomatic Relations: -1.0 >>> +1.0
Casus Belli: 0.0 >>> 1.0
So, if you think Argentina shouldn't like the UK too much (due to Falkland Islands) you could let me know something like this.
Civilian Relations: 0.2
Diplomatic Relations: 0.3
Casus Belli: 0.1
