Patrol boats - anyone use them?

Post by Leafgreen »

I see them as one shot kills for other people that run around and become dead in the water because of low movement range. I guess they are good at seeing subs before they die.

Anyone that uses them that could give me some tips and reasons to build them?

I use them for coastal defense mostly, when I am playing in simulate mode. Particularly any Littoral designs. If I have far flung islands/colonies I may assign them there to act as trip wires. In all instances I load them with Anti Ship missiles. This increases their attack range and hitting power, turning these small vessels into deadly attack craft.

Normally I just use them as extra missile platforms to backup much more capable ships.

As someone that uses them in older time periods before they get turned into missile ships, I tend to consolidate my fighting ships which leaves portions of my coasts undefended which is something they are good for. It allows me to leave my main units in central areas able to respond in whatever direction rather than having to chase them down myself, or let their ships get directly to my coast. It's admittedly a small gain for the extra effort to manage them but I enjoy it. I will often sometimes use them as escorts to join my capital ships so that they take the initial hits from the enemy allowing my heavier ships to escape the fighting unscathed.

I can see those as valid points. Cheap, but soak up damage if kept with blue water navy. Missiles and hunt other ships/subs, but make sure they have long view distances.

Thank you.

Depends on the regio, for Iran there is not much choice then use patrol boats and make tons of anti ship missiles, before you research a good design or get one. Usually i just neglect navy in that case tho, who needs navy anyway with a good air force. It's nice if you wanna do realistic invasions, but too much hassle i just exploit the game and invade US from one of the bordering regios, instead of being hunt down by 200 ships which are better then mine.

it is a nice resource if you catch them all and scrap them.
Unless you start as an island nation - you can extend that to the whole navy - then you have enough mil.goods for building boots on the ground and ammo to take what counts.

Sometimes i use missile boats to cover coasts as a cheap ... well ... patrol. I also use the ones that have bigger range then 1 hex to bombard enemy units from the shore. But in general i don't produce them and mostly scrap them for resources. They have very low detection ranges, low survivability, low damage, low range. It's mostly worth more to build higher quality destroyers/cruisers then build any patrols. You CAN try using them as a cheap screen to soak up some damage to protect your main fleet but i seriously doubt thats worth it.

i only build them if they have decent vision and are inexpensive to operate. for example one I usually build in ww2/early cold war era is the (old style) Japanese Otori, which has an okay 52m visual range. They work somewhat okay for increasing vision, and as an early-warning system if they get attacked. Really I use them as a patrol. I value vision, including keeping an eye on the size/composition of nearby nation's navies and they serve that purpose effectively.

Hope that Finland get those sweet, sweet frigates (okay, technically they are corvettes, but size of a frigate). At least I would really love option to research them later on in te game.

I would not have to fight with only patrol boats and smaller naval ships anymore.

Quite the capabilities list they want. Mine-laying and ice-breaking.
