Unit Graphics - What we have - What we need - What might be appropriate Replacements

Post by DasVivo »

To avoid ruining Nereis thread with walls of text I will be publishing lists of units in game in different categories to help and to encourage us to:

A) Keep track of what units could do with replacement/upgraded unit graphics
B) To discuss where already made new unit Graphics could be used on other units (Eg: S-300 PMU1 Graphics used for S-400 Triumf)
C) To make the task of finding units in game that these could be applied to a lot easier by listing names in potential Families
D) To make the task of deciding which projects might serve more units in game all the easier

I encourage anyone to share thoughts, considerations and such here if they have any....

Top 5 Exporters: MBTS

So, I looked at a lot of the Tanks/MBTs in the game.... and have compiled a very rough list of MBT families based upon
A) Decade of first entering service
B) 'Relatives' of one another (so for the sake of it T-72 and M-84 are part of the T-72 family tree unless potential for complete new family exists: eg: T-90s or if they are from another of those 5 major States, Eg: T-55 vs Type 59)
C) I have stuck with the 5 Members of the UN Security Council as they tend to be the most prolific weapons exporters and thus their products will most likely be in the service of more nations, as compared to say - Merkava or Ariete Tanks)

This list will neither be perfect but it may help give people an idea of what units might impact the game in a large way and indeed help Battlegoat think about which units might benefit in updates from the graphics that Nerei has already kindly created.... Some discretion may be necessary as will some visual differences like T-64A vs T-64BM Bulat seem quite visually different....

If I have missed any units that have been done or started on let me know and I'll update this list.... Likewise I am happy to try and compile similar lists for widespread IFVs/APC Families and with far more ease specialised kit like SPAAG, SAMs, SPGs..

Looking at this list: I would say quite a few of the important variants are covered....
My thoughts are that a good US Cold War MBT might be useful - Something in say the M47, M48 and M60 Familiies of tanks.... They have enjoyed a good lifespan in service, used by many countries and widely produced... The game does already have a basic model for this niche though so we can weigh one argument for versus the other against...

Some of the other units added by Nerei I think likewise could be used for different variants than just the specific one applied in game (Far more appropriate than the current default models)

Examples of this would be

Model: S-300 PMU1 (Possible Variants in Game to apply to: S-300 PMU1, SA-10B Grumble, S-400 Triumf, SA-20 S-400 Triumf and possibly S-500*) (S-500 quite possibly will be a dual launcher not Quad Pack but still closer than current graphics)

Model: SSBN-667 Delta III (Possible Variants in Game to apply to: SSBN-667B Delta I, SSBN-667 Delta III, SSBN-667 Delta IV BDRM)[/quote]

Soviet/Russian SAMS

I am far from an expert but Soviet/Russian SAMs and AAA can probably be described somewhat as thus organised in different overlapping and mutually supportive Echelons within two seperate structures/branches..... Typically the Army had its own, and the former PVO - Air Defence Troops also had their own seperate systems..

I will try and extrapolate quickly these into time period of introduction, echelon, volume and maybe examples in game...)
Regiment Level also typically also have a Gun and a seperate Missile System (Tunguska would be considered - Gun), I will try avoid overlooking the Gun Systems (atleast the self propelled ones)
MANPADs are listed seperately as eventually I can update this list, if say we find ourselves getting Infantry/Uniform/Equipment changes by decade/generation
Likewise I will italic the variants we have

... and last ,but not least and I even would say most important,
a link, where all that normal users could download

ONE zip file and instructions (no text editing, just replace files), to have all that 3D Models for use in the vanilla SRU game ...
that would be nice.

THANKS

Unfortunately modding for the SR series while actually fairly powerful is not always easy for the end user.

The only real option that would not involve digging through default.unit and recompiling would mean providing pre-compiled files on top of the art assets. I am not objecting to that at all but it is not something I personally have the time to make.

If anyone wants to create such a pre-compiled package they are welcome to use any content I have made.

Also I do actually have a package that contains all the content I have made. I do however not feature it prominently as 95% of the content in that package is available in the core game. Again as mentioned though short of providing pre-compiled files they still require editing files and recompiling.

For the record I do not consider something like steam workshop to be a working solution. Imaging downloading a unit that is set to be added to all 2017/2020 starts. Recompiling would probably take well over an hour on my i7 desktop. My netbook is going to use 5-10 times as long. That is not getting into the possible conflicts with file names, conflicting files and ID's some of which could be hard to resolve.

Really for as much good workshop can offer to some games for this series it is probably going to involve it breaking things, being slow and a chances are a significant portion of the community would blame me for it.

I may do these myself if no one else is working on them. I can make the models reasonably easily, just got to work on the textures as my skills are poor in that area even with someone like Nerei with his good skills advising me (I've never been good at texturing). Check out my thread for some models I have on WIP.

I think its best instead of creating a big mudpack, if we continue to pass the models onto the goats as then everybody can benefit from the models rather than a few. I think they've put my Trafalgar class sub in the files somewhere, and of course all of Nerei's models that made it into the game. The Goats added 140+ models in the last big patch don't forget.
My SR:U Model Project, get the latest and post suggestions here:

... if the devs are including them, that is really the best option !

So thanks all of you for your hard work.
Well done :o
