I did an Ethiopia AAR for Hearts of Iron 2. I feel your pain bud. It's a long road :)

Ok folks, it looks like Colonization is the overwhelming choice. Next update - we will see what happens.

May 4th 1942 - Over the past year, Guatemala has nearly kicked Italy out of Eastern Africa. Ethiopia has been stranded in deadlock with the invaders so Guatemala has gone on the offensive and invaded Eritrea thus cutting off Italy's last access to Ethiopia (In honor of CommandoSupremo).
Side Note: I hate Eritrea. Every game I play that involves invading them, they move to their little port-less city on an island and force me to use paratroopers.

With the majority of Eritrea locked down and Ethiopia cleaning up the last pieces of Italian resistance in their borders, I decide to attempt a landing in Eastern Lybia and Italian occupied Tunisia.
Image
Image
Both landings are successful. Italy is down to 2 ports remaining in Africa. Now, the long process of conquering Italian Libya begins. It is decided to leave our Tunis attack troops in the port city while the main offensive focus is placed in Lybia.

Image
Yes, this is exactly what you think it is. I am building a freakin bridge to get to the last Eritrean city. :)

December 12th 1943 - After nearly a year of fighting, our troops flush the last Italian out of Libya.
Image
Also, captured territory in Tunisia is handed back to their parent country. Our old Militia and Infantry as well as a recon cavalry and fighter unit are given to them to help them re-take territory captured by Italy.

Naturally, Tunisia did nothing with these troops and is as useless as they are in Commando's Ethiopia AAR (Balth, tell your boys to give Tunisians some balls!).

Image
Feb 5th 1944 - Germany has conquered the USSR and is now dealing with a huge partisan problem. UK has annihilated all naval forces in the Atlantic and English Channel. USA has entered the war but has yet to attempt a landing in Europe or any Japanese islands. Japan has recently made advances on much of China's coast. For once, Japan is holding its own.

Guatemala is in a difficult position. Possessing 3 African colonies and finally making nearly 1M positive income per day, they have to decide the next move.

Again, I give you all options.
1. Invade Italy
2. Invade Japanese islands and eventually the mainland
3. Wait another year to see what develops in Europe

I leave the choice to you guys.

Ahh, sparing my little Ethiopia :)

I would say go ahead and invade Sicily, Operation Husky style!

(America beat the Italians out of North Africa while I crushed the rest of their forces in Libya and Tunisia, I was forced to annex Libya like a big fat hypocrite because America has been gobbling up African land like crazy)

Isn't Tunisia just the worst? They are so incapable even with good units.

I'd echo CommandoSupreme's choice to continue operations where you currently have a launching point and see what you can do about getting rid of those Italians. :D

Feb 26 1944 - The invasion of Italy has begun. War planners decide to start with Malta, Sicily, and Sardinia.
Image
The fight for Malta lasts less than a day with light casualties.

Mar 9 1944 - After some heavy fighting, the capture of Sicily is in full swing. There is a looming problem however. Fighting a 1st world nation has proved to be much more difficult for our small albeit professional army. While we are winning, we are also using an immense supply of military goods. We fear, before we finish Sicily, we will be without ammo and supplies. In comparrison, Italy has had no real enemies to waste ammo on since we captured Libya. They have also had ample time to prepare and have stocked significant supplies. We will have to take this slowly.
Image

June 21 1944 - The advance was stopped at Palermo. Our armies have run dry.
Image

Aug 15 1944 - Our advance in Sicily was stopped for a month before supplies could catch up. The last part of Invasion Italy Phase 1 has begun.
Image

Soon, we will have no choice but to invade the Italian mainland. We are hoping and praying that the UK and USA get involved. If we open up a front in mainland Europe without the allies supporting from the north, there is a good chance Germany will come to assist their allies and crush us.

Jul 18 1945 - Our bridge to mainland Europe is complete! You all may laugh but, when you don't have a navy, you have to use alternative modes of travel :)
Image

The invasion has begun!

Image
Our troops push into southern Italy.

Image
Feb 22 1946 - The first push is a success thanks in no small part to our artillery battalion (Arty is an awesome force multiplier).

The allies finally showed up! South Africa has re-occupied much of German occupied France, Norway has cut a swath southward from what was once the Netherlands, and the UK has pushed southward from Denmark all the way to Northern Italy. The war is turning in our favor. If we are to establish a lasting Guatemalan empire, now is the time to strike. The next year will be a frantic land grab from the losing Axis powers....and I only have foot soldiers.

You and me both haha! They ran into almost no resistance there. Germany is too busy defending its homeland.

Now that the UK is pushing into Italy, I am going to have to take a huge risk with my few troops and push quickly up to Napoli. If all goes well, I may make it to Rome before the Brits do! It's like a repeat of the allied vs USSR rush for Berlin :)

Mar 17 1946 - The rush for Rome has begin. Fighting in Napoli and the surrounding villages is intense but casualties are light (for us). As our troops march north to capture the next Italian port, a giant is awakened....
Image
That's right! Nearly the ENTIRE Italian naval reserve consisting mostly of heavy cruisers and battleships sails out of port...all guns pointed at our undefended troops out in the open..This is going to hurt.

Image
All troops are ordered to immediately move inland into the protection of the forest. Their retreat is bombarded by an armada of destruction. We can't afford to lose these troops!

Apr 24 1946 - After losing an entire battalion and nearly a second one, the port is taken. Troops have all retreated inland and are letting British subs clear out any lingering Italian ships...or at least scare them back to port.
Image
Also, as you can see, we are down to 3 artillery units. Courtesy of the Italian Armada.

May 29 1946 - The attack on Rome is about to begin. We will push with most of what we have left. The Brits are fast approaching from the north. If we are to take the military good rich Italian capital, it's now or never.

June 3rd 1946 - ITALY HAS FALLEN! Germany is fast approaching its demise. However, we will sit out that fight. With the capture of Italy came the capture of a significant number of battleships and escorts (yay!). It will take another 4-5 months to catch up on the military goods it takes to repair them all.
Image

Jan 20 1948 - The past 2 years have been a struggle against economic downfall. We finally are producing goods in all the important categories. Oil is tight but our Libyan colony is helping with that. We have had 2 years to build up our military. We have reached the size of a reinforced Division!
Image

Here is a world report.

Germany has fallen.
USSR has most of its lands south and east of Moscow.
Finland is the last Axis member in Europe and holds all USSR territory north and west of Moscow.
USSR is at war with Poland who now has a huge swath of USSR land. Thanks to the UK, the USSR is losing...badly.
Finland is also losing to the British juggernaut.
Greece is back with a vengeance. It owns all of its previous territory as well as Bulgarian and some Hungarian and Romanian lands.
Cuba occupies 1 port in what used to be Yugoslavia HAHA.
Japan is almost completely intact except for a few random cities on the mainland which are occupied by China.

Speaking of Japan...It's time the Guatemalan Merchant Marines did some Island hopping. Next stop, Tokyo.

Jan 24 1948 - The Pacific campaign begins!
Here are our immediate objectives.
1. Capture Palau - 1 Battalion
2. Capture Micronesia - 1 Battalion
3. Capture Mariana - 1 Battalion
4. Capture Taiwan - 5 Battalions

It is hoped that a swift strike on all 4 objectives will catch Japan off guard. We also have the benefit of a very distracted enemy you know...with the USA invading it and all.

Image

Before I continue, I must apologize. I didn't take any screenshots of my COMPLETE fail.
I was able to take the 3 smaller Japanese colonies and colonize them myself without any casualties. However, my ENTIRE invasion force was wiped out when it attempted a landing at Kaosiung (the southern Taiwanese port). As soon as my first troops landed, I was unfortunately met with the majority of the Japanese navy which apparently had been anchored there. Needless to say, 10+ battleships and another 20-30 other ships made quick work of my entire invasion force. I was effectively without an army aside from my 3 battalions.

Nov 30 1948 - We spent the better part of a year quickly scraping up new recruits for a re-attempted invasion. In that time, we also sent the entire navy as well as some newly traded British battleships and heavy cruisers to Taiwan. A good portion of the Japanese navy was destroyed at the price of all but 3 of our ships (out of about 20).
Image
It was decided that a landing at Chang-Hua would be much safer due to its lack of size for large ships to moor there. We were correct.

Image
Dec 8 1949 - The war is nearing a close. This war that consumed the planet has reached its final days with the Allies claiming victory. Over the last year, we have rebuilt our shatterred economy as well as caught up as well as we could in tech trading. Thankfully the UK gives us a 70% discount on purchases. With our economy stable, it is now time to make a final push on Japan. The USA has conquered the mainland but there is still Shikoku and Hokkaido. Unfortunately, until the USA lets us in, we can not get to Shikoku due to it being surrounded by USA waters. Hokkaido here we come!
