Expanding the battle of the Atlantic

Post by SGTscuba »

Would it be possible to expand the battle of the Atlantic to cover other theatres and nations. For example the eastern part of the north sea could be used to blockade Germany. There are probably other examples that could be used like around Japan.

This is something I'd like to see happen. Personally, I currently turn it off every single game just because is has such a narrow use. Japan as you pointed out is an excellent example, but every nation with coastal hexes should be effected. America should be just as susceptible. Russia even had serious issues with getting the equipment it needed due to German blockades of their few ports not blocked by weather.

One way to try representing it is that when a nation is at war, every ship that isn't within coastal waters has an effect on enemy goods received based on the proportion of coastal hexes to normal hexes. A nation such as the UK or Japan with their large coasts compared to inland territory would be highly subject to it, so if Germany puts a lot subs and ships in ocean hexes beyond national borders, then it should have an effect on all effected nations sales and purchases on the world market.

I recognize that it's an imperfect suggestion, where German ships in the North sea would effect all of its enemies equally, even when it's less realistic such as Japan.

You could improve that by having it effect countries who have a presence within a theater zone +1 extra. Rather than having constant map hex checks which would effect the game, simply have a series of tags for each ocean theater zone and have the game run those checks maybe every 6 months or so. Any nation which has territory within one of those zones would get a check for that, plus a check for each sea zone that one borders. Britain would get an automatic check for Northern Europe, plus the North Atlantic, Western Europe, Central Europe, and Eastern Europe. And that's only from it's mainland territory. British bases around the world would also trigger the checks, expanding how vulnerable they are. Compare that to Japan which doesn't have the same spread. They would obviously be effected by Northeast Asia, but also Southeast Asia, the North Pacific, and oddly the Western United states based on their mainland territory, but their scattered islands would also subject them to areas such as the South Pacific as well. Still imperfect, but it would mean an enemy like Germany would have a hard time hitting them, at least once the German Far East Fleet has been destroyed.

Any ship you send into one of those sea zones would effect any enemy nation that has the tag for it for as long as the ship remains in that zone and is beyond border limits. That's obviously to prevent someone from keeping a fleet safe near your own border and still having the effect. You have to take risks and put your ships out to sea in order to create the effect. And if your enemy is too weak to stop you, then it results in a blockade. If they are strong enough to hunt your ships down, then the effect will be diminished as your ships are destroyed or forced out of action.
