Gun emplacements not firing?

I've plopped down a ton of gun emplacements on a choke point (suez canal) in hopes of creating a deathtrap for enemy shipping. However, many surface ships will not be fired upon at all.

This isn't an issue of supply (guns are in supply), rate of fire (guns haven't fired in days since last target appeared), or range (ships pass within one hex).

Does anyone know why gun emplacements might not fire on a passing enemy?

I wonder if its a bug with units not moving therefore not firing and ROE?

Before you place your favorite "gun emplacement" hover with mouse over the entry and check stats - some of those emplacements or fortification are just a place where your units get a big entrech-bonus and even little supply but are not even a static artillery piece - important stats to have to shot at ships ship attack, ship attack range, and combat time needs all to be higher than zero.

I thought the "gun emplacement" was only a single type, that could attack all land and ship units within a couple of hexes?

Guns Emplacements are indeed Large Guns, with a range of 20kms. The other type is named Emplacement, which is a "bunker" to entrench units in.

The two things which come immediately to mind concerning them not firing;

1. Access is based on the treaty system. At game start many nations have access to these areas and may pass freely through them. Although, this should not apply to any nation the owner of the canal/straight is at war with. Possible issue.

2. Spotting. If the Gun Emplacement does not spot the enemy unit, it stands to reason it may not fire at it. Things which may affect this, even in a one hex wide canal/straight. Weather, time of day, spotting. The Gun Emplacement itself has 0km spotting range. Try parking a Recon unit with long range Spotting in the same hex.

I'm in a state of war with the target. Clear weather. And I even built an early radar (64km spotting radius; 4 hexes). Global ROE set to the most aggressive (high initiative, opportunity fire on, pursue enemy, etc).

Maybe something BG needs to look at. Only other thing I have thought of in the mean time is the fact that on higher speeds spotting is "reduced" or does not function the same as at normal or slower speeds. I do not recall seeing this in patch notes, but it happens. It is my opinion, BG did this to increase game speed. Not as many calculations to make so the game will run faster. But something is lost in the process.

I never turn game to full speed because of this.. i don't know what calculations are removed in the name of speed but i feel like the game plays out very differently on the top speed than it does on lower speeds.

Yeah I never run at fastest either. That and I always play with enhanced spotting and ranges off for additional realism.

I normally run at fastest when the game bogs down. I think this may not just affect gun emplacements but also units. I've noticed I have to make my units move to target any enemies outside of their adjacent hexes (mainly noticed with naval units) even when their range is multiple hexes.

It affects ALL spotting. Planes, facilities, ground and naval, in my experience. I run on very fast during peace times and sometimes, even at war. I have seen enemy BB's drive right up to my Task Forces and coasts un-spotted and open fire. Oh, and they moved past patrolling aircraft, subs and DDs. Stationed in various hexes along their path. When I slow the game back down and others appear, they are spotted at range then.

I've seen it with the missile launchers not firing missiles (and ships) unless I have them on Patrol, maybe I should just slow down the game from fast/fastest to normal speed whilst at war. I thought it was just the reaction time of the unit combined with the 200(250?) km max auto missile targeting range that the game has.

I actually did a search both here and on Steam for any mention of this. I did not find anything. But the correct keyword could have been a multitude of things.

If Mr Geczy would be so kind as to weigh in, I would like to know at what speed the spotting etc starts getting affected? Is it anything above normal?
